Floating Energy Systems
We are recognised experts in FPSO technology, project execution and O&M management. Our founder, Mike Wyllie, has executed multiple pioneering FPSO projects during his 23 years working at SBM Offshore, from the simple vessels of the 1990s up to the latest generation of mega-FPSOs in the Brazilian pre-salt fields.
He also managed the global operations of the SBM fleet of 14 FPSOs covering vessels in Brazil, West Africa and Asia. He was responsible for the qualification and implementation of a wide range of new FPSO technology, which played a role in SBM’s growth to become the preeminent FPSO Contractor.
Since forming OpenWater Energy, Mike has been involved in several major FPSO EPC projects for various clients, as well as supporting the O&M activity of multiple FPSOs operating in Brazil.
On a project-specific basis, we are supported by experienced multi-disciplinary associates from our pool of available resources.
Typical projects we have executed in the last 5 years have included:
- Using the latest standardisation techniques to reduce project cost and schedule, and improve the certainty of a successful outcome.
- Performing Project Reviews during the conceptual design, FEED and tender stages focused on identifying the key risks and opportunities and defining the associated mitigation and action plans.
- Acting as Owner’s Engineer to support the ongoing EPCIC and O&M stages of several world-scale FPSOs.
- Integrating the latest Digital and Robotics tools and processes to improve O&M performance, reduce offshore manning levels, and reduce risk.
- Screening available FPSO candidates for potential relocation to new fields.
We have also applied this rich experience of floaters to benefit projects in the LNG Industry. We have been involved in the conceptual design of several FLNG projects and have applied similar principles of standardisation, digitalisation and robotics, adapted from the FPSO industry, to improve the latest FLNG designs.
At the other end of the LNG chain, we have helped to develop a range of standardised floating solutions for the LNG-to-Power market.
We believe that the floating energy systems of the future will include products such as Green Ammonia and Methanol FPSOs, as well as floating energy storage, and we are actively applying our skills and experience to help shape this emerging market.
Life Cycle Services
Life Cycle Services
OpenWater Energy provides a wide range of services over the entire project life cycle, from business development and concept selection through to EPCIC and offshore operations and maintenance.
In each area, we can lead specific work scopes as stand-alone packages or provide Owner’s Engineer level of support to our clients for broader work scopes.
Our team of associate consultants each has decades of experience in project development, project execution, and offshore operations and maintenance, making us ideally placed to support our clients in all these areas.
Emission Reduction
OpenWater Energy believes that there is considerable opportunity to reduce emissions from existing and new FPSO and FLNG projects by deploying a range of proven technologies.
These include combined cycle power generation, closed flare, and hydrocarbon tank blanketing, among others.
We discussed these in our Newsletters of January and February 2022, which can be found on the Insights page.
Since then, we have been working with Clients to implement many of these ideas, which are now being more widely accepted in the industry and becoming standard features of many new projects.
Floating Green Energy
Floating Green Energy
New FPSO projects are emerging in the market, including Green and Blue Methanol FPSOs and Green and Blue Ammonia FPSOs.
OpenWater Energy believes that these new products can greatly benefit from the long history of floating oil and gas production and processing. There are many parallels and many hard-won lessons learnt that are directly transferable.
We are involved with one of the most promising of these, a Green Ammonia FPSO, to help ensure that the designs are robust, safe and operable.
